If Words Hurt
by Baylee Hartman
If words hurt, then these moments are sharp kitchen knives sticking out of my chest,
and someone has their hands on my head with the intent of introducing it to the wall.
If words hurt, then months of emotional pain can be summed up in a sentence,
one paragraph is excruciating and one page is hell.
If words hurt, then as pages turn, hands shake in fear, anguish, and in pain.
If words hurt, then books affect the heart as beatings affect the body
and that speech sent desolation shooting sharply down my spine.
If words hur.,
Then despondency comes with the territory
of the victims with their noses in books,
hiding their sorrows and their tears.
If words hu.., then I am alone to face them
as they batter my body, my mind, and soul.
If words h..., then how can I deal with another death.
Another person I have come to love...death by author.
Another knife in my body, maybe this one’s in my throat.
If words .… are powerful enough to cause pain
Is there no way to pull the knives out?
if word. …. kindness was taught
No way to remove the hands from my head to stop it’s friendship with the wall?
if wor.. ….,
sentences burn.
if wo… ….,
paragraphs are excruciating.
if w…. ….,
pages are hell.
if ….. ….,
If words hurt, then why do I keep reading?
and someone has their hands on my head with the intent of introducing it to the wall.
