The Girl with the Cracked Mask
A world of white holds the darkest of people. They are called the devourers. The devourers wear masks to cover their gluttonous faces and roam the white land with greed. They were the children, the men and women, everyone in society. From the banker to the local store owner, everyone who walked the streets were the devourers. The motto of their society is “thrive from greed, and do not forget creed”. The devourer’s society was overly prosperous and wealthy, but every so often they were missing something. When they needed that space filled they went to a special place of this world. One that holds a great mind that no one had noticed.
This place was located in a corner of this white world. The devourers considered this place to be the “blackened corner” because it was inhabited by a unique person. It was a girl, a beautiful girl, who stood in that corner alone. She always watched the devourers walk by. She was the pariah of the society, its own personal Giving Tree. She was intelligent, and caring to all--but she was different. Her mask had a crack running down the side. The devourers believed that this was a sign of failure, or a sign that shows she was of a lower class. Her parents knew that this would happen, they had seen it before. They were frightened of her being different and they did not want to be ostracized. Her parents ended up abandoning her and leaving her to fend for herself. Little did they know of the precocious character she would blossom into.
The girl did not mind that her life was overly somber. She believed that life is a gift, and that her life was a gift. She loved to be visited by the devourers, although their intentions are usually impure. She was a very intelligent girl, who also had the power to grant wishes. If there was ever a time that the town needed assistance with money or plans, they would come to her. They knew of her kindness and of her powers. They used her to their advantage. She would never ask for anything from them as compensation. If she asked they would ignore her and shun her. Since she had known that she decided asking was selfish, and decided to never ask. The girl was content with that outcome. She believed that she did not need to ask for anything. Her heart is fueled by the love she can give to people. Her view was that if she ever wanted anything, she can find it herself and work hard for it. There is a problem with her love for being overly generous. Every request she grants, a part of her mask breaks off. Once her mask fully shatters, her life will end. Just like a tree. Once it is chopped down there is nothing left and that is what would happen to the girl.
The devourers noticed this. Although they knew they would be sending her to her demise, they did not do anything to stop it. Their greed grew stronger with each request, and so her demise further enveloped her. One by one a new devourer would stop by and speak with her. Today 278 people asked for beauty and wealth. Tomorrow 376 more will ask for the same selfish things. This same cycle went on and on endlessly. Day by day her mask slowly chipped away. Cracking, chipping, leaking her tears, and she still continues to smile. The requests continued, and the world was colored blacker than soot from a fireplace. Soon the final day would arrive, and the girl would no longer have anything to give. One last devourer would come and steal her last piece, causing the entire world to become a complete mass of darkness. The girl’s face was exposed, causing her body to be swept away by the wind. A pile of dust being tossed around in a dry desert. The girl had disappeared and had thanked everyone for the life she had as she disintegrated. The devourers no longer had their Giving Tree.
Silence filled the world. No one talked, no one moved. The devourers stared at the spot where the girl once stood. They began to assess the situation and began to see what they had done. They were frightened, lonely, and sorrowful. Each of the devourers lamented for the girl who once represented the light of the world, but was seen as a creature of the dark. Guilt overcame them, almost consuming them. Their world of white became a dark mass of black. Only then did their society change their corrupt, and hypocritical ways. The people of society must learn to respect the people with the cracked masks, before the world loses them.
